What are Urgent Fees?
Urgent fees are really common in warehousing when you have a cutoff time at the end of your day, and any orders which come in after that cutoff time incur a surcharge to get them out. Now, the reason why a lot of businesses do this, is that if they don't have some sort of limit to when they can receive orders, they receive all of their orders at the very end of the day, and then they have to keep their staff back and keep them working late.
An urgent fee is something that a lot of businesses implement, essentially saying to their customer, "If you need an order packed and it comes in after 4:00 PM, then we can do it, but we're going to charge you an extra $10.00." The problem, however, is that normally despite negotiating that, when an order does come in after 4:00 PM, nobody actually records that it was packed, and so therefore the urgent fee may never get charged.
Reducing Revenue Leakage
Within both our transport management system and warehouse management system we created an urgent order function such that you can specify a cutoff time. And then when orders come in after that cutoff time the customer is notified that, "Hey. Your order missed the cutoff time, but if you'd like it to be packed today you can click this button to have that done, and it will mark the order urgent and you'll be charged an urgent order fee." This just simplifies the whole process because it is now very clear to the customer, "Yes, we can do this. There will be an additional charge, and we will definitely charge you for doing this." because it's all tracked in the one system and captured when we come to invoice.
